A Bolans man who left his sister with severe burns and broken bones after attacking her with scalding water has been ordered to spend four years behind bars.

Clayton Jeffery received the sentence Friday for wounding with intent, bringing the criminal case stemming from the violent Oct. 29, 2023, incident to a close.

His sister suffered third-degree burns across her back as well as fractures to her left leg and right hand. She spent three weeks in hospital and, according to evidence presented to the court, was bedridden for about eight months following her discharge.

The injuries were inflicted during an attack near their mother’s home in Bolans.

On the day of the incident, the woman was making her way toward the house when she noticed Jeffery approaching with a kettle containing scalding water. He was also shouting a threat.

She tried to escape, but her brother caught up with her and emptied the hot liquid onto her back.

Even after she screamed and fell to the ground, the violence continued. Jeffery kicked and punched his injured sister until people nearby stepped in and stopped him.

The court was told there had been no confrontation between the two immediately before the assault.

Jeffery later gave police a different explanation for what triggered his actions. He said he believed his sister had been discussing him with people in the community.

He claimed that after hearing neighbours repeating a rumour that day, he became angry. He subsequently encountered his sister on the road and went after her with the hot water.

Jeffery admitted responsibility for the attack when he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent on June 22. He became emotional during that appearance and was seen wiping tears from his face as he entered the guilty plea.

His four-year prison sentence was imposed Friday.
