PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad — The body of legendary calypsonian Dr. Slinger “Mighty Sparrow” Francisco has returned to Trinidad and Tobago ahead of his final farewell.
Francisco’s body arrived at Piarco International Airport on Tuesday, Oct. 6, aboard Caribbean Airlines Flight 521 from New York. His son, Cyril Sancho Francisco, and Culture and Community Development Minister Michelle Benjamin were among those present for the arrival.
The celebrated performer, widely known as the “Calypso King of the World,” died in New York on Sept. 27 at age 91 following a brief illness. His family said he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Grenada in 1935 and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, Sparrow became one of the Caribbean’s most influential performers during a career spanning more than seven decades. His music helped bring calypso to audiences around the world.
Officials and members of the Francisco family are continuing preparations for his funeral and other activities marking his final farewell.
