— Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced that the government has extended another invitation to the Barbuda Council for discussions on development projects taking place on the sister island.
In a letter dated Oct. 10, 2026, Cabinet Secretary Konata Lee invited the council to meet with the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda as early as Wednesday, Oct. 14, to discuss matters concerning Barbuda’s development.
The correspondence, addressed to Barbuda Council Secretary and Chief Executive Officer O. Shari Cannegieter, follows previous attempts by the government to arrange consultations with the council.
“Further to our previous correspondences, I am writing on behalf of the Cabinet to re-extend our cordial invitation to meet with the Barbuda Council,” Lee wrote.
The letter said the proposed meeting would provide an opportunity to discuss pressing development issues affecting Barbuda.
It also referenced a decision taken in 2024 to re-establish a formal framework for collaboration between the central government and the Barbuda Council through the Joint Consultative Committee, which was established in 2000.
The government has asked the council to indicate whether its members are available to meet Wednesday or suggest another date that better accommodates their schedule.
In a Facebook post accompanying the letter, Browne said the invitation was part of the government’s efforts to consult the council on ongoing development activities.
“Yet another invitation sent to the Barbuda Council, as we seek to consult with them on the various development projects taking place on the island,” the prime minister wrote.
The letter did not identify the specific projects to be discussed or indicate whether the Barbuda Council had accepted the invitation.
The latest invitation comes amid ongoing discussions over development and land administration in Barbuda, including the government’s efforts to establish a land registry and issue freehold land certificates.
It remains unclear whether the proposed meeting will proceed Wednesday or whether the council will request an alternative date.
