The Antigua Public Utilities Authority expects to withdraw its construction teams from St. John’s by the end of this weekend, clearing the way for accelerated road repairs ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said Friday that APUA was in the final stages of its underground utility work in the capital, with the installation of new water distribution lines completed.

Remaining activities include final service connections, the installation of valve box covers and reinstatement of sections of pavement affected by the upgrades.

“APUA advised Cabinet that the authority is in the final stages of completing its on-the-ground utility works in the capital and expects to withdraw its construction teams from St. John’s by the end of this weekend,” Merchant said.

The update followed a presentation to Cabinet by APUA and the Ministry of Works on Wednesday, October 14, as Antigua and Barbuda prepares to host CHOGM from November 1–4.

Merchant acknowledged public concern about conditions in the capital while the utility upgrades and roadworks have been underway.

He said High Street was already receiving water through its newly installed main, marking a milestone in efforts to modernise the city’s ageing water infrastructure.

APUA’s withdrawal is expected to allow the Ministry of Works to accelerate resurfacing and restoration over the weekend and into the following two weeks.

Asked whether sufficient time remained to complete the road improvements before CHOGM, Merchant said Cabinet was confident the ministry could meet the deadline.

He said particular attention would be given to preparing the High Street area, where the summit’s opening ceremony is to be held.
