Prime Minister Gaston Browne has outlined plans for commercial and residential development at Fort James, including a marina, as part of a wider redevelopment of the coastal corridor from Point.

Speaking Thursday at the handover of the Pelican Court housing development, Browne said government investment in the surrounding area would continue beyond the completion of the 150 condominium homes.

“We will be developing the entire corridor here going right down to Fort James,” he said. “In fact, Fort James itself will be developed into a commercial facility, a residential facility, one in which we’ll also have a marina.”

Browne did not identify investors, provide an estimated cost or announce a construction timetable for the Fort James development. His remarks also did not detail the location or scale of the marina and residential facilities.

The announcement formed part of his account of further development planned for St. John’s City West, combining housing improvements with business opportunities and community facilities.

Closer to Pelican Court, Browne said Sweeney Alley would be cleared in the first quarter of 2027, with residents relocated to Pelican Court and Barrymore.

He said an entrepreneurial facility would be built on the waterfront, primarily for people from the community.

“We recognize, too, that we have to provide you with opportunities to earn money, those of you who are entrepreneurs,” he said.

In an interview with ABS after the ceremony, Browne also outlined plans for an enterprise zone between Food City and the distillery.

The prime minister presented these initiatives as part of a broader approach to improving living conditions while expanding economic opportunities for residents.

He pointed to earlier investment in housing at Paradise Cove, the redevelopment of Villa Primary School and the construction of a polyclinic and community centre as elements of the area’s renewal.

Browne said the development approach being pursued in his constituency would also be applied elsewhere in Antigua and Barbuda.

“Whatever we do here, we’re going to replicate throughout the country,” he said.
