High Street is now receiving water through a newly installed distribution main as the Antigua Public Utilities Authority completes utility upgrades in St. John’s.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant announced the milestone Friday, saying the installation forms part of efforts to modernise the capital’s ageing water infrastructure.
“The Authority informed Cabinet that High Street is now being supplied through the newly installed water main, marking an important milestone in the program to modernize the city’s aging water infrastructure,” Merchant said during the post-Cabinet media briefing.
APUA reported that installation of the new water distribution lines had been completed. Remaining work was concentrated on final service connections, fitting valve box covers and reinstating sections of pavement affected by construction.
The update followed a presentation by APUA and the Ministry of Works to Cabinet on Wednesday, October 14, on infrastructure improvements ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
Merchant said APUA expected to withdraw its construction teams from the capital by the end of the weekend, allowing the Ministry of Works to accelerate road resurfacing and restoration.
He acknowledged concerns expressed by residents about the condition of St. John’s during the works.
Although the new main is supplying High Street, the briefing did not specify whether customers would immediately receive longer supply hours or experience fewer interruptions.
No figures were provided on the main’s capacity, the number of properties served or the cost of the installation.
