Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene says the road running east from the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium toward Parham will not be completed before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, but remedial work will be undertaken to help residents reach planned events.

Speaking at Wednesday’s CHOGM town hall, Greene acknowledged the deadline could not be met after a resident questioned the condition of the route serving the Parham playing field, a designated park-and-ride location.

“It is not possible to have that road from the stadium going eastwards to Parham complete before CHOGM. I’m going to be brutally honest,” Greene said.

“But we will be doing some remedial work between now and next week to facilitate the movement of our citizens.”

The resident, who identified herself as Ms. Carr, described the back road as “atrocious” and asked what could be done urgently to accommodate people using the parking facility.

Greene said official convoys would not use the road, but stressed that access for residents also mattered.

“Clearly, the convoys won’t go down the road, but we also put a premium on our people and their movement to and from the CHOGM events,” he said. “So you have not been left out.”

He also pledged to have Public Works representatives attend a subsequent town hall in Parham to address the concern.

Police identified playing fields in Parham, Sea View Farm and Pigotts as parking locations for people attending the Independence ceremonial parade at the stadium on November 1.

Antigua and Barbuda will host CHOGM from November 1 to 4.
