Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she expects to travel to Antigua and Barbuda on Nov. 2 to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, with Works and Infrastructure Minister Jearlean John acting as prime minister during her absence.

Speaking to journalists at the T&TEC Divali Celebration in Couva on Saturday night, Persad-Bissessar said she would be away for three to four days.

She said 52 nations would be represented at the meeting, describing it as an important engagement for Trinidad and Tobago.

Asked who would act as prime minister, she replied: “Jearlean John … no hesitation.”

The 28th CHOGM is scheduled to take place in St. John’s under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

The biennial gathering brings together Commonwealth leaders, ministers and representatives of business, civil society and youth organizations. Discussions are expected to cover climate resilience, trade, innovation, equality and sustainable development.
