Smoke from Faulty AC Unit Interrupts Evacuation Drill at National Performing Arts Centre
An evacuation drill at the National Performing Arts Centre in St John’s was cut short after an air-conditioning unit on the roof malfunctioned and began emitting smoke.
Students and other occupants were safely evacuated from the building, formerly known as the Deluxe Cinema, as firefighters responded to the incident.
The exercise, organised by the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), was scheduled to take place between 11:00 and noon.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Social and Urban Transformation Minister Rawdon Turner visited the scene following the incident.
Turner said the malfunction was being addressed.
Emergency personnel assessed the situation while those evacuated remained safely outside the building.
No injuries were reported.
