The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a high surf advisory as long-period swells from the north continue to generate dangerous sea conditions across parts of the Leeward Islands.

According to the 5:00 a.m. bulletin, the advisory remains in effect for Antigua until midday, and for Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and St Kitts and Nevis until later this afternoon.

Meteorologists say northern swells of up to five feet are producing breaking waves between six and ten feet, leading to hazardous surf and strong, life-threatening rip currents along northern and western coastlines.

Residents and visitors have been warned to expect beach erosion, localised coastal flooding, and potentially dangerous conditions for small craft operators and other marine users.

The Met Service also cautioned that saltwater intrusion could temporarily affect the potable water supply in some coastal areas.

Beachgoers are being urged to avoid exposed or rocky coastlines and to swim only at beaches where lifeguards are present.

The public is also advised to favour sheltered southern beaches and to remember key rip current safety measures — including staying calm, floating to conserve energy, and swimming parallel to shore if caught in a current.

The Met Service reports a swell period of 10 to 11 seconds, with the possibility of minor coastal flooding during high tide.
