The reduction of the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax from 17 percent to 7 percent is a clear demonstration of people-centered leadership and sound economic stewardship, according to Dwayne George , junior minister in the Ministry of Finance.
In a detailed social media statement, George said the tax cut reflects a deliberate decision by the government to put citizens first while continuing to responsibly manage the economy.
“The reduction of the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) from 17% to 7% is a clear demonstration of decisive leadership and a firm commitment by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to put people first while responsibly managing the nation’s economy,” George wrote.
He said the policy delivers “direct and meaningful relief” to households across the country, particularly working families, seniors and vulnerable citizens facing rising living costs.

George argued that lowering the tax burden on goods and services moves economic benefits beyond theory and into everyday life.

According to George, the reduction also signals confidence in the strength and resilience of the national economy, pointing to fiscal discipline and long-term planning.

George also said the tax cut is expected to support local businesses by stimulating consumer spending, enhancing competitiveness and protecting jobs.
