Governor General Sir Rodney Williams used today’s swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed senators to remind members of the Upper House that their role extends far beyond ceremonial duties, urging them to approach the responsibility with integrity, diligence and a commitment to strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s democracy.

Addressing the senators at Government House, Sir Rodney said the Senate occupies “a vital role within the constitutional framework of Antigua and Barbuda” and stressed that its strength lies in the value members bring to national debate and legislative review.

“The Senate is expected to contribute thoughtful examination, balanced judgment, and expert insight,” he said, noting that proposed laws must be “carefully considered, refined, and strengthened in the national interest.”

Sir Rodney warned senators that good legislation must go beyond responding to immediate issues and instead anticipate future realities and evolving circumstances.

“Laws must be capable of embracing multiple scenarios and producing outcomes that are meaningful, practical, and sustainable for generations to come,” he told the newly appointed lawmakers.

The Governor General said senators carry a “profound obligation” because their deliberations and contributions will help shape the legal and social framework under which people live, work, invest and raise families.

“As you prepare to assume your duties formally in Parliament, I encourage you to approach this responsibility with humility, diligence, respect for different viewpoints, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.

Sir Rodney also acknowledged the sacrifices often associated with public service, thanking the families and loved ones supporting the senators as they take up their new responsibilities.

He concluded by expressing hope that “wisdom” would guide the Senate’s deliberations and that “mutual respect” would continue to strengthen democracy in Antigua and Barbuda.
