Antigua and Barbuda is installing 200 surveillance cameras as part of an expansion of the national CCTV network, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced.

Browne said the cameras are intended to strengthen police intelligence gathering, criminal investigations and responses to incidents across the country.

The expansion forms part of a broader crime-fighting initiative that includes drones equipped with night-vision technology and an estimated operating range of 25 kilometres.

Police records are also being digitised, while additional training is being provided to prosecutors.

The Prime Minister said law enforcement officers have intensified stop-and-search operations, resulting in the recovery of more illegal firearms and ammunition.

However, Browne did not identify where the cameras would be placed or disclose the programme’s cost and expected completion date.
