The National Student Council (NSC) has officially launched a new set of resources designed to strengthen the development, administration and operation of Student Councils with the gaol of promoting student leadership throughout the national education system. As part of the initiative, every school across Antigua and Barbuda will be furnished with a copy of the Constitution of the National Student Council and the new Student Council Guide and Regulations.

The Constitution of the National Student Council establishes the framework for the governance and functioning of the national representative body for students. The new Student Council Guide and Regulations provide schools with practical guidance on the establishment, structure, administration and operation of Student Councils, with the objective of supporting their meaningful contribution to the development of education. The Training Manual provides content and specific areas of skills development for student leaders.

The resources are intended to provide students, teachers and school administrators with a common framework for understanding the role of Student Councils and supporting effective student participation in school governance and the wider education system. The National Student Council recently presented copies of these newly developed documents to the Ministry of Education. The resources will be distributed to each school and this action represents another step in the continued institutionalization of Student Councils across Antigua and Barbuda. The NSC will continue to work with schools, Lead Teachers and student representatives to provide training, technical assistance and other support necessary to strengthen school-based student councils.

Director of Education, Mr Clare Browne reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the continued development of Student Councils, student leadership and democratic institutions within the education system. The Ministry recognizes the important role that students can play in contributing to their schools and in developing the leadership, communication and civic skills necessary for active participation in society.

The National Student Council remains guided by its three core pillars:

REPRESENTATION • MOBILIZATION • ADVOCACY

Through these principles, the NSC seeks to strengthen student voice, encourage meaningful participation and support the development of capable and responsible young leaders.
