Antigua & Barbuda has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Veer Group as part of its effort to become the Caribbean’s first fully decarbonized cargo port.

As stated, the agreement aims to support the deployment of ocean-going, zero-emission container ships. According to local news outlets, under the agreement the Antigua & Barbuda Port Authority will also begin developing a green fuels ecosystem at the port of St. John’s.

Furthermore, plans include the establishment of facilities for the production, storage and delivery of clean marine fuels, as well as infrastructure for ship bunkering and shore power, allowing vessels to plug in while docked to eliminate emissions during port stays.

As reported, these developments could position the port of St. John’s as a potential regional hub for refueling and energy supply for zero-emission shipping in the Caribbean.
