Twelve outstanding Antiguans and Barbudans will be honoured on Monday as part of the nation’s 44th Independence celebrations, including five individuals who will be knighted for distinguished service to national development.
Director-General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the awards ceremony will take place at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium during the Independence Parade and Food Fair, beginning at 5 p.m. The honorees will be recognized for their contributions to education, community service, nursing, artistic and cultural development, and youth empowerment.
Merchant described the national honours as a highlight of the Independence festivities, which also include National Dress Day and the annual food fair. He said the government views the honours as a reflection of the country’s gratitude toward citizens who have made significant contributions to Antigua and Barbuda’s progress.
The ceremony forms part of a wider weekend of celebration marking the country’s journey of resilience and nation-building since independence in 1981.
