Tributes are pouring in following the death of broadcast technician Darren Richards, a longtime behind-the-scenes contributor to Antigua and Barbuda’s media landscape, who died after battling colon cancer.

Pointe Broadcasting Network confirmed Richards’ passing on Tuesday, describing him as a quiet professional whose work was integral to the production of Nightly News on Pointe FM.

“When people think of media practitioners, reporters, anchors and on-air personalities often come to mind,” the network said in a statement. “Too often overlooked are those who work quietly behind the scenes — the technicians and engineers whose contributions are essential.”

Richards, a technician, was remembered for the calm presence he brought to the newsroom, particularly during live newscasts. The network said his steady demeanor was reassuring and valued by presenters and colleagues alike.

“Pointe Broadcasting Network is deeply grateful for the time Darren spent with us and for the meaningful contributions he made to our nightly news operations,” the statement said, extending condolences to his family, relatives and friends.

Condolences were also expressed by the St. John’s City West branch of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

In a statement issued by branch chairman Rodney Jarvis, condolences were offered on behalf of Prime Minister Gaston Browne, the City West Branch Executive and members of the constituency.

“We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to former chairman Delano Richards and his family, as well as to Darren’s wife and children,” the statement said, encouraging the family to draw strength from their faith during the period of mourning.

Both statements acknowledged Richards’ legacy as a committed professional whose contributions, though largely unseen by the public, played a vital role in broadcast operations.
