Distribution of lumber under the government’s housing assistance initiative has officially begun, with materials delivered Friday to a vulnerable homeowner in English Harbour.

Social and Urban Transformation Minister Rodan Turner monitored the loading and dispatch of lumber from storage as part of the rollout, while St. Paul Member of Parliament E. P. Chet Greene observed the delivery process in the community.

The beneficiary, Mrs. Sebastian, was identified as one of several residents eligible for assistance under the programme aimed at improving housing conditions for seniors, persons with disabilities and those facing economic hardship.

“I’d like to thank Mr. Green for his assistance, for speaking to the government that I could get these material to fix the house because I haven’t got it, the money to do it,” the homeowner said. “So I’m thanking him from the bottom of my heart on behalf of my children and grandchildren.”

She added, “I know that he would come through for me. So Mr. Green, I thank you. And hope that you’ll finish it up.”

Greene described the initiative as one of the government’s most significant social interventions.

“I think that this program is by and far, or easily, one of the most impressive and important programs of government,” he said, pointing to the challenges faced by seniors, people with disabilities and households experiencing economic strain.

Turner said the ministry is closely monitoring the distribution process to ensure materials reach approved beneficiaries efficiently, as part of a broader effort to upgrade housing stock in vulnerable communities.

Officials indicated that additional deliveries are expected as the programme continues its islandwide rollout.
