The Antigua and Barbuda government has reached an amicable settlement in a long-running legal dispute involving former public servant Eloy De Freitas, bringing an end to a matter that has spanned nearly three decades.

Officials confirmed during the weekly post-Cabinet briefing that the case — widely known as De Freitas vs the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Lands and Housing — has been resolved following negotiations between the parties.

The dispute dates back to 1990, when De Freitas, then an extension officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, participated in peaceful demonstrations drawing attention to allegations of government corruption following a national commission of inquiry.

Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, said Cabinet agreed to settle the matter in the interest of justice and reconciliation.

“The Cabinet announced that it has amicably resolved that long-standing legal matter involving the former public servant, Eloy De Freitas, bringing conclusion to a dispute that has spanned near three decades,” Merchant said.

He noted that both sides had reached an agreement addressing the outstanding issues, including payment of agreed legal costs.

“Both parties have reached an agreement to resolve the outstanding issues, including payment of agreed costs,” Merchant said.

The settlement, he added, closes one of the country’s longest-running legal disputes and reflects a commitment to fairness and the rule of law.

“The settlement brings finality to a matter after many years of litigation and reflects a shared commitment to fairness and respect for the rule of law,” Merchant said.

The government did not disclose the financial terms of the settlement.
