The government has approved a new management structure for fisheries complexes across Antigua and Barbuda, placing the facilities under the control of Antigua Fisheries Limited.
The decision affects fisheries complexes at Point, Parham and Urlings in Antigua, as well as the facility in Barbuda.
Cabinet said the move is intended to improve operational efficiency, strengthen accountability and enhance services provided to fishers, vendors and other users of the facilities.
During Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, officials reviewed the condition and management arrangements of the fisheries complexes before agreeing that Antigua Fisheries Limited should assume responsibility for their administration.
According to the Cabinet briefing, the company was selected because of its experience and institutional capacity to oversee the facilities and implement improvements.
As part of the transition, Cabinet also approved a new board of directors for Antigua Fisheries Limited. The board will be chaired by Hassett Julian and will provide oversight and strategic direction for the organization.
Officials said the new governance arrangement is expected to support the modernization and long-term sustainability of the fisheries sector while ensuring that the complexes remain properly maintained and responsive to the needs of fishing communities.
The facilities were previously managed by the Fisheries Division within the Ministry of Agriculture.
