Antigua and Barbuda’s new renal unit is expected to open within the next one to two months, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Saturday.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show , Browne said work on the facility is in its final stages as the government continues to expand specialized healthcare services.

“We will complete the renal facility within a matter of maybe a month or two. It’s practically finished,” Browne said.

The renal unit is one of several healthcare projects being advanced by the government to improve access to medical services.

Browne also said Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph is expected to travel to China as part of efforts to develop a cardiac unit for Antigua and Barbuda.

In addition, the prime minister said the country’s long-awaited cancer treatment centre is expected to open this fall after delays caused by legal issues involving previous buyers.

Browne said the government remains focused on strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure through investments in specialized treatment facilities to reduce the need for residents to seek care overseas.
