A stevedore has died following an industrial accident during cargo operations at Woodbridge Bay Port in Dominica.

Police identified the victim as 47-year-old Otis Francis of Tarish Pit. The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on Friday while he was working aboard the cargo vessel _Tropic Opal_ at the Fond Colé port.

According to the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force, Mr Francis suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a shipping container. An on-call doctor pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Crime Scene Unit examined the area as investigators began determining the circumstances surrounding the accident. Mr Francis’ body was taken to Lyndhurst Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.

In a statement, police extended condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, describing the incident as a tragic loss.

The fatal accident has shocked the port community and disrupted operations at the facility. Authorities said investigations are continuing to establish how the incident occurred and whether any workplace safety breaches contributed to the death.
