**“For You have been my hope, O Lord GOD, my confidence since my youth.”**

This morning, while reading through my daily devotional, I found myself lingering over a simple verse from Psalm 71. Some passages immediately challenge us, while others seem to wrap around us like a comforting reminder from an old friend. This was one of those passages.

What struck me was not simply the verse itself, but the perspective from which it was written. The psalmist was looking back over a lifetime and reflecting on God’s faithfulness from his youth to his later years. As I considered the many conversations I have had with entrepreneurs, business leaders, parents, retirees, students at UWI and young professionals, I realized that regardless of where we are in life, we all share a common desire: **the assurance that we can face tomorrow with confidence.**

In a world filled with uncertainty, rapid change, and constant demands on our attention, many people are searching for something stable enough to hold onto. Psalm 71 offers a powerful answer. The writer points us not to circumstances, possessions, or personal achievements, but to a lifelong relationship with a faithful God.

That reflection inspired me to share today’s devotional with readers.

There is something deeply reassuring about meeting someone who has lived through many seasons of life and can still say with confidence, “God has never failed me.”

That is the spirit behind Psalm 71. The psalmist looks back over a lifetime of experiences and recognizes a remarkable truth: **the Lord has been his hope and confidence from his youth until old age**. Through victories and disappointments, moments of abundance and times of uncertainty, God remained faithful.

In a world that changes constantly, that kind of confidence is increasingly rare.

Many of us can remember the early days of our faith journey. We knew very little. Our prayers were simple and sometimes uncertain. We did not have all the answers. Yet God met us exactly where we were. He provided guidance when we were confused, comfort when we were hurting, and strength when we felt overwhelmed.

Looking back now, we can see that those moments were not random acts of divine kindness. They were lessons in trust. God was patiently teaching us that He could be relied upon.

The hope described in Psalm 71 is not wishful thinking. It is not crossing our fingers and hoping things work out. Biblical hope is confident expectation based on the character and faithfulness of God. It is the assurance that the God who carried us yesterday will carry us tomorrow.

As we reflect on our lives, many of us can identify moments when God showed up in ways we never expected. Some can point to financial challenges they somehow overcame. Others remember illnesses from which they recovered, difficult family situations that were resolved, or closed doors that later proved to be blessings in disguise.

For the people of Antigua and Barbuda, resilience is part of our national story. We have faced hurricanes, economic pressures, global disruptions, personal setbacks, and moments of uncertainty. Yet through it all, many can testify that God has remained present and faithful.

Often, it is only in hindsight that we fully appreciate His hand at work.

Just as an anchor proves its strength when the sea becomes rough, our faith often becomes strongest during life’s storms. Difficult seasons reveal the depth of our trust and remind us that our security was never meant to rest in circumstances, possessions, status, or even our own abilities. Our security is found in God alone.

The psalmist understood this. His confidence did not diminish with age because his confidence was never rooted in his own strength. It was rooted in the Lord.

That truth becomes increasingly important as the years pass. Our energy may change. Our circumstances may change. The world around us certainly changes. But God does not.

The prophet Isaiah records God’s reassuring promise:

“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

_Isaiah 46:4_

What a remarkable promise. The God who walked with us as children, guided us as adults, and sustained us through countless challenges has no intention of abandoning us now. His faithfulness does not have an expiration date.

Perhaps that is why some of the strongest testimonies come from those who have walked with God the longest. Their confidence is not built on theory. It is built on experience. They have witnessed God’s faithfulness repeatedly, and their lives stand as living proof that He keeps His promises.

Today, take a moment to reflect on your own journey. Think about where you were five, ten, or twenty years ago. Consider the challenges you have overcome, the prayers that were answered, the doors that were opened, and the burdens that were lifted.

Write down three specific ways God has been faithful to you. Share one of those stories with a friend, family member, or colleague who may need encouragement. Your testimony could be the reminder someone else needs that God is still at work.

And if you are currently facing uncertainty, resist the temptation to focus solely on what worries you. Instead, remind yourself of what God has already done. The God who helped you before has not changed. The God who sustained you then is able to sustain you now.

Open His Word. Spend time in prayer. Take the next step of obedience. Walk forward in faith.

The same God, who was faithful yesterday, remains faithful today, and He will be faithful tomorrow. Whatever lies ahead, you do not walk into it alone.
