Our Teachers Deserve Compassion, Not Salary Cuts
When a teacher is diagnosed with cancer, the battle extends far beyond the hospital. It is a fight for health, dignity, financial stability, and hope. Sadly, some of our educators are being forced to fight another battle—against policies that reduce their salaries while they are seeking life-saving medical treatment.
What makes this even more troubling is that the Ministry is fully aware that many forms of specialized cancer treatment are not available locally. Teachers amongst others are often required to travel overseas to receive chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, or consultations with specialists. These journeys are not vacations or personal choices; they are matters of life and death.
Despite this reality, teachers who have devoted years, and in many cases decades, to educating our nation’s children are seeing their salaries reduced while they undergo treatment. This is not only financially devastating but morally troubling. No one battling a life-threatening illness should have to wonder how they will pay their mortgage, feed their family, or finance the travel required to receive medical care.
Teachers have spent their careers investing in the future of this country. They have comforted children, worked beyond school hours, purchased classroom supplies from their own pockets, and remained committed to their profession despite countless challenges. When illness strikes, they deserve to know that their government will stand beside them—not add to their hardship.
Public institutions should reflect the values of fairness, compassion, and humanity. Policies that result in salary reductions for teachers receiving medically necessary cancer treatment should be reviewed and amended. A compassionate government does not penalize its employees for becoming seriously ill. Instead, it ensures they have the support needed to focus on recovery without the added burden of financial insecurity.
This issue is larger than any one individual. It is about how we, as a society, treat those who have dedicated their lives to serving others. If we cannot support our teachers during one of the most difficult periods of their lives, what message are we sending to every public servant who faithfully carries out their duties?
This is not only affecting cancer patients but also teachers that are battling other life threatening illnesses.
The Ministry has an opportunity to correct this injustice. It should engage with teachers’ representatives, review its policies, and implement measures that protect educators facing catastrophic illnesses. Compassion is not a weakness; it is the hallmark of responsible leadership.
Our teachers have spent their lives caring for our children. It is now time for those in positions of authority to demonstrate that they are prepared to care for the teachers when they need it most. No educator fighting cancer should also have to fight to keep the salary they have earned through years of dedicated service.
