Emergency response capabilities at V.C. Bird International Airport have been strengthened with two specialised aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles and a fully equipped ambulance.

The firefighting vehicles, acquired for about US$1.2 million, include a Volkan Lion Class 6×6 capable of carrying 14,000 litres of water and a high-reach extendable vehicle supported by two water tankers. The ambulance cost an additional US$100,000.

Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Charles “Max” Fernandez said the investment reflects the government’s commitment to safety and emergency preparedness at the airport.

Deputy Police Commissioner Vivian Parker said the equipment represents a promise to passengers, airlines and citizens that airport safety remains a priority.

The new vehicles will support Category 9 airport operations and improve response times during aircraft emergencies.
