The Government will formally table in Parliament a list of all people serving in diplomatic positions on behalf of Antigua and Barbuda, under a new measure intended to strengthen transparency and public accountability.

Cabinet approved the initiative Wednesday following a proposal from Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

The list will provide a formal public record of the people entrusted with representing Antigua and Barbuda in diplomatic circles overseas.

Cabinet described the measure as an important addition to the country’s governance framework, saying diplomatic appointments carry significant public responsibilities and should be subject to an appropriate level of transparency.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort by the Government to improve accountability in the conduct of public affairs.

Cabinet also agreed that senior government positions should be publicly advertised when they become vacant. The change takes immediate effect and is intended to give suitably qualified members of the public an opportunity to apply.

The Government said the new approach would promote a more competitive and transparent process for selecting candidates with the necessary qualifications, experience and leadership abilities.

The policy could apply to vacancies for permanent secretaries and other senior positions that might previously have been filled by promoting people already serving within the public service.

Appointments and selections within the public service remain the responsibility of the Public Service Commission.

Consistent with the new policy, Cabinet is inviting applications for executive chairman of the Citizenship by Investment Unit.

The Government said it is seeking qualified and experienced candidates capable of providing strong executive leadership and ensuring the unit maintains high standards of professionalism, accountability, integrity and regulatory compliance.
