A new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait went on sale Wednesday as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence.

The U.S. Mint said the special 2026 coin was struck to commemorate 250 years of American history and can be used as legal tender.

Trump’s portrait appears on the front of the coin alongside the words “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” as well as the dates “1776 ~ 2026.”

The reverse features the Presidential Seal, including an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, with the number “250” displayed on its shield.

The coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint and have a gold-colored appearance, but are not made of gold. According to the Mint, their composition is primarily copper, along with zinc, manganese and nickel.

A roll containing 25 coins is being sold for US$61, while a bag of 100 costs US$154.50.

The Mint also produced 250,000 special versions bearing a “July 4th” mark. Those coins, struck on Independence Day, have been randomly placed among rolls and bags being sold to collectors.

The decision to feature a sitting president has attracted controversy because federal law generally restricts living presidents from appearing on U.S. currency. The Associated Press reported, however, that the Treasury secretary has authority to approve certain special coin issues.

The Trump dollar forms part of a wider series of redesigned coins being issued to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial.
