The Government plans to replace outdated legislation governing Antigua and Barbuda’s fire service with a new legal framework recognising its expanded role in emergency response and rescue operations.

The Fire and Rescue Service Bill, 2026, is expected to be introduced in the House of Representatives on 18 September.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin told Cabinet that the proposed legislation would bring the service’s legal framework in line with its current responsibilities.

The Bill is part of a wider package of public safety and justice reforms, with Parliament also expected to consider new laws covering policing, forensic services, firearms, court procedures and mental-health care.

The Government says the measures are aimed at ensuring emergency, law-enforcement and justice agencies operate under legislation suited to their modern functions.
