Agriculture Minister Anthony Smith Jr. has announced the arrival of 4,000 bags of fertilizer from the Kingdom of Morocco for distribution to farmers across Antigua and Barbuda.

Smith said the shipment is the largest received since Antigua and Barbuda’s fertilizer collaboration with Morocco began in 2018.

“I’m extremely proud to announce the arrival of 4,000 bags of quality fertilizer from the Kingdom of Morocco to be distributed to our farmers,” Smith said.

According to the minister, improved negotiations and sustained efforts helped secure the shipment, which is expected to support farmers in increasing crop yields and strengthening domestic food production.

Smith said fertilizer plays an important role in replenishing nutrients in the soil, allowing farmers to produce more food efficiently from the land already under cultivation.

The shipment also forms part of efforts to improve food security and provide greater support to the agricultural sector.

“Food security is a goal we are chasing together, and we are committed to standing alongside our farmers every step of the way,” Smith said.

The government has been pushing for increased domestic food production, with Smith recently reporting on initiatives to expand agricultural water infrastructure and put more land into productive use.
