    Saharan Dust Alert

Antigua and Barbuda is expected to experience another significant surge of Saharan dust from Friday, with air quality forecast to reach unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.

The Meteorological Service said conditions are expected to worsen from Friday evening through Saturday morning as the country is affected by its 29th notable Saharan dust event of 2026.

Fine particles, including PM2.5 and PM10, are expected to increase, pushing the Air Quality Index to between 101 and 130. An Air Pollution Alert Level III has been issued.

Health officials are advising people with asthma, other respiratory illnesses, heart conditions and allergies to limit outdoor exposure and avoid strenuous activities.

Children, older people and those prone to eye or skin irritation may also be more affected by the dust.

Residents are encouraged to keep doors and windows closed where possible. Those who need to go outside may consider using a mask that can filter PM2.5 particles.

The public is also being urged to monitor official updates as the conditions develop.
