Prime Minister Gaston Browne has warned that Antigua and Barbuda will not be used as a safe haven by criminals fleeing other countries.

Speaking Saturday on the Browne and Browne Show, Browne said authorities have encountered people from several Caribbean countries who allegedly entered Antigua and Barbuda after becoming involved in criminal activity elsewhere.

“They seem to be coming to Antigua as a safe haven,” Browne said. “Not just Jamaicans alone, but even other countries.”

The prime minister said a Trinidadian and a Vincentian were recently deported, while a Jamaican man who allegedly fled his country is now in custody in Antigua and Barbuda.

“Antigua and Barbuda will never be a safe haven for criminals, no matter where you emanate from,” Browne warned.

“You can come from the Caribbean, Europe, North America, South America, Asia — wherever you come from, you will be deported to whence you came.”

Browne stressed that the warning applies only to people involved in criminal activity and not law-abiding immigrants living in the country.
