A former athlete convicted of sexually abusing his young daughter has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity, was convicted in July on two counts of serious indecency following a High Court trial.

He received eight years on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently.

An all-female jury before Justice Ann Marie Smith found him guilty of digitally penetrating the child and placing his genitals against her on separate occasions between 2022 and 2023. He was acquitted on a third count.

The child testified that the abuse occurred while she was living with her father and when his girlfriend was away. She later resisted attempts to return to his home because she feared the abuse would happen again.

Under cross-examination, she denied being coached to make the allegations.

Her grandmother also testified that the child had previously become distressed and refused to leave with her father.
