KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent and the Grenadines — Four people were killed and four others wounded in a mass shooting near Kingstown, as police investigate what authorities say could be the latest violence involving rival groups.

Police responded to reports of gunfire in the Green Hill community in Central Kingstown on Friday night and discovered four people with apparent gunshot wounds.

Acting Commissioner of Police Trevor Bailey said two bodies were found on a public road, while a woman was discovered dead inside a vehicle. A fourth victim was found on nearby land.

Four other people suffering from gunshot injuries were taken to Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. Two were treated and released, while two remained hospitalized Saturday.

No arrests have been made, and police have not established a motive.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Brenton Smith said investigators were gathering intelligence and would provide further information once the circumstances surrounding the shooting became clearer.

The killings come amid concerns over gang violence and retaliatory attacks between rival groups in the multi-island Caribbean nation.

Bailey said police have seen instances of groups retaliating against each other and condemned the violence.

The latest deaths bring the country’s homicide count to 37 so far this year.

Authorities said additional patrols and searches were being carried out and intelligence-sharing among police units was being strengthened as investigators search for those responsible.

Bailey also appealed to young people to reject crime and violence.

“Violence has no part in our society,” he said.
