A 26-year-old woman donated a kidney to her 49-year-old mother in a transplant performed Friday at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, the hospital said.

Both women are doing well and remain under close observation as they recover from the Sept. 25 surgery. It was the hospital’s 14th kidney transplant.

Abdominal transplant and urologic surgeon Dr. Obi Ekwenna led the procedure, with transplant nephrologist Dr. Ian Thomas and a multidisciplinary team.

Thomas said patients are still waiting for kidneys and encouraged people to consider living donation. Donors do not have to be related to recipients, he said.

The Medical Benefits Scheme has supported the development of the hospital’s transplant service, while the Antigua and Barbuda Renal Society contributed financially to the latest procedure. The programme will mark its 10th anniversary in 2027.
