The Antigua and Barbuda government is considering adding more magistrates and judges as the country prepares for increased pressure on the criminal justice system following the introduction of tougher penalties for serious crimes.

The issue was discussed by Cabinet as part of the government’s wider response to crime and violence in Antigua and Barbuda.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne told Cabinet that the justice system must have adequate resources to deal efficiently with criminal matters.

Cabinet discussed appointing additional magistrates and judges, where required, to help ensure cases move through the courts efficiently and that increased law enforcement and prosecution do not result in unnecessary delays.

The discussion follows Parliament’s approval of tougher penalties for serious firearm offences and sexual offences against minors.

Browne also advised Cabinet that the stronger sentencing framework could lead to an increase in the population at His Majesty’s Prison.

The government has said its wider response to crime in Antigua and Barbuda will combine stronger legislation, effective policing and rehabilitation.
