Prime Minister Gaston Browne has given the Attorney General and prison authorities 30 days to develop a comprehensive reform programme for His Majesty’s Prison in Antigua and Barbuda.
Cabinet spokesman and Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant disclosed the directive during the post-Cabinet media briefing.
Merchant said Browne advised Cabinet that tougher sentencing measures are expected to place additional demands on the prison and that the government must plan accordingly.
The Prime Minister called for greater emphasis on rehabilitation and skills development, with programmes aimed at preparing inmates for productive reintegration into Antigua and Barbuda society.
“The Prime Minister directed that the Attorney General and the relevant prison authorities and officials develop a comprehensive prison reform programme within 30 days for consideration by the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda,” Merchant said.
Cabinet also discussed expanding productive activities at the prison farm.
Browne called for additional land to be brought into production, with greater emphasis on growing food crops and rearing pigs, chickens and other livestock.
The government is also preparing for a possible increase in the prison population following the strengthening of sentencing provisions for serious firearm offences and sexual offences against minors.
Merchant said Browne stressed that the government’s response to crime must remain comprehensive, combining strong legislation, effective policing and rehabilitation.
