Government Says Police Will Get More Resources Where Legitimate Needs Are Identified
The government says it will provide additional resources, equipment and other support to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda where legitimate needs are identified.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet news conference, Maurice Merchant said Prime Minister Gaston Browne directed continued follow-up with the leadership of the police force on its crime-fighting efforts.
“The Prime Minister also directed that there be continued follow-up with the leadership of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda on its crime-fighting efforts,” Merchant said.
According to Merchant, Browne called for regular engagement with police leadership to identify any gaps in resources, equipment or other support that could impede the force in carrying out its responsibilities.
Merchant said Cabinet reaffirmed that “where legitimate needs are identified, the government will continue to provide the police with appropriate support.”
The support, he said, is intended to strengthen the police force’s ability to prevent, detect and investigate crime.
Merchant also said Browne and Cabinet commended the police for improvements in their efforts to combat crime and violence in Antigua and Barbuda.
The discussions formed part of Cabinet’s wider consideration of the government’s response to crime, which includes stronger legislation, policing and rehabilitation.
