The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs announces the appointment of new members to the Midwifery Board, who were sworn in by His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General, at Government House on Wednesday.

Dr. Kamaria DeCastro has been appointed Chairperson of the Board, with Nurse Patricia-Ann Clarke-Thomas serving as Deputy Chairperson. The other members are Nurse Jacqueline Jno-Baptiste, Nurse Laurellyn Williams, Nurse Arlea Gregory, Nurse Wanda Samuel and Dr. Andre Winter. A Secretary to the Board will be appointed by His Excellency the Governor General at a later date.

The Board plays an important role in supporting the regulation of midwifery practice and the maintenance of professional standards, helping to ensure that women and newborns receive safe and quality care throughout Antigua and Barbuda.

Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, the Honourable Michael Joseph, welcomed the appointments and highlighted the value of having a medical doctor serving alongside experienced nursing professionals on the Board.

“The practice of midwifery is an essential part of maternal and newborn healthcare, and the Board has an important responsibility in supporting professional standards and safe practice. The inclusion of a medical doctor alongside nursing professionals brings complementary clinical expertise and perspectives to the Board’s work. This multidisciplinary approach can strengthen collaboration among healthcare professionals, support informed decision-making and contribute to the continued improvement of maternal and newborn care in Antigua and Barbuda,” the Minister said.

The Ministry looks forward to working with the newly appointed members as they undertake their responsibilities in support of professional accountability, the continued development of midwifery practice and the delivery of safe, quality maternal and newborn healthcare services across Antigua and Barbuda.
