The Optimist Club of St. John’s is preparing to recognise and celebrate the achievements of outstanding young men across Antigua and Barbuda at its annual Distinguished Gentleman Awards Ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, November 28, 2026.
The initiative seeks to shine a positive spotlight on young men who are making meaningful contributions to their schools, communities and society, while encouraging a culture of excellence, responsible citizenship and personal development.
“At a time when much of the public conversation surrounding young men focuses on social challenges and negative behaviours, the Distinguished Gentleman Awards offers a refreshing and important counter-narrative — one that celebrates the many young men who are demonstrating leadership, discipline, talent, resilience and a commitment to making a difference’, a release from the Club states.
Secondary schools are being invited to nominate five deserving young men from Third to Fifth Form, with one student recognised in each of five categories:
– Academic Excellence: Recognising outstanding scholastic achievement and dedication to education.
– The Arts: Celebrating exceptional talent and accomplishment in the visual or performing arts.
– Service: Honouring young men who demonstrate civic responsibility and a commitment to serving their schools, churches or communities.
– Sport: Recognising athletic achievement, discipline and exemplary sportsmanship.
– Perseverance: Celebrating courage, determination and resilience in overcoming adversity and personal challenges.
The awards reflect the Optimist Club’s longstanding commitment to youth development and its belief that recognising positive achievements can inspire young people to realise their full potential.
Beyond the presentation of awards, the ceremony is intended to be a meaningful occasion of affirmation, providing young men with an opportunity to be publicly celebrated before their peers, educators, families and the wider community.
The organising committee believes that positive recognition plays an important role in shaping the confidence, aspirations and future direction of young people. By highlighting achievement across diverse areas, the initiative reinforces the message that excellence is not limited to academic performance, but can also be demonstrated through creativity, service, athletic ability and strength of character.
