The Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission (ABRSC) has formally written to His Majesty King Charles III, urging him to use the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda to advance meaningful action on reparatory justice.

In a letter dated October 21, 2026, addressed to the King’s Private Secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, ABRSC Chairperson Ambassador Dorbrene O’Marde called for greater historical accountability for the trafficking and enslavement of Africans, the genocide and dispossession of Indigenous Peoples, and the enduring consequences of colonialism.

The Commission recalled the commitment made by Commonwealth leaders at CHOGM 2024 in Samoa to pursue meaningful, truthful and respectful conversations on reparatory justice, stressing that CHOGM 2026 must move the conversation beyond acknowledgement towards tangible action.

The ABRSC also challenged the continued refusal to offer formal apologies for historical atrocities, describing such positions as insensitive to the legitimate demands of descendants of enslaved Africans and Indigenous Peoples.

Recognising the King’s moral influence and leadership within the Commonwealth, the Commission urged His Majesty to champion a process grounded in truth, accountability, reconciliation and justice.

“This is a conversation whose time has come,” the Commission recalled from His Majesty’s previous remarks, emphasising that the time has now come to give practical meaning to those words.

As Antigua and Barbuda prepares to welcome Commonwealth leaders, the ABRSC maintains that reparatory justice must not remain a peripheral discussion, but must become a meaningful priority on the Commonwealth’s agenda.
