The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has established a committee to review proposed changes to public bus fares over the next 90 days.
The decision, made during Cabinet’s October 21 meeting, follows recommendations from the Antigua and Barbuda Bus Association and the Ministry responsible for Transport.
The proposals include phased fare increases, charges for travel on designated public holidays and changes to subsidised transport for primary schoolchildren in uniform.
According to the Cabinet report, bus operators are facing rising costs for fuel, maintenance, insurance, spare parts, labour and vehicle replacement.
The committee will assess how potential fare increases could affect commuters, particularly students, senior citizens and workers who rely on public transport.
It will also examine government transport subsidies and the long-term financial sustainability of bus services.
No fare increases have been approved, and no proposed amounts have been announced.
The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within 90 days, after which Cabinet will decide on the next steps.
