The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus Guild of Students has expressed sorrow over the death of 24-year-old Akeykjah Nibbs, who was fatally shot in Ottos, Antigua, on Sunday.

In a tribute shared on social media, the Guild mourned Nibbs as a member of its university community, describing him as a fellow Frigate and extending condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.

“The UWI Five Islands Campus Guild of Students mourns the loss of our fellow Frigate and extends our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him,” the tribute stated.

The Guild also expressed hope that those grieving would find comfort in their memories of Nibbs and the support of those around them.

“Rest in eternal peace, Akeykjah. You will always be part of our Frigate family,” the organisation added.

Nibbs was identified earlier Sunday as the victim of a fatal shooting in the Ottos community.

According to earlier reports, he was travelling in a vehicle with a female companion when two individuals allegedly emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire.

Nibbs reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.

The vehicle reportedly sustained multiple bullet holes during the attack.

There were also unconfirmed reports that the occupants of the vehicle may have been followed before the shooting. However, police had not publicly confirmed those circumstances or established whether the attack was targeted.

The condition of the female companion was not immediately known.

The Guild’s tribute adds to the expressions of grief following the young man’s death, which has affected both his loved ones and members of the university community.

The organisation shared a memorial image featuring Nibbs’ photograph, white lilies and candles, accompanied by a message wishing him eternal peace.

Further information about the circumstances of the shooting is awaited as the investigation continues.
