Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs, the Honourable Michael Joseph, met today with key members of the Lancet Oncology Commission and strategic partners to discuss opportunities for strengthening cancer prevention, research and early detection across Commonwealth countries.

The meeting, held on the heels of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda, provided an opportunity to explore how the work of the Lancet Oncology Commission could be advanced and translated into practical action, particularly for developing states with limited financial resources and health data.

Discussions focused on how Commonwealth countries can leverage the Commission to strengthen national research and data collection, improve the evidence available to guide decision-making and develop policies that better respond to the cancer-related needs of their populations.

Particular attention was given to the challenges faced by developing countries, where limited resources and gaps in data can affect the ability to plan and implement effective cancer programmes.

A key area of discussion was the need to shift greater attention and investment towards prevention and early detection, rather than continuing to grapple with the significant burden of late-stage cancer diagnoses.

The engagement also explored how greater collaboration among Commonwealth governments, the Commission and its partners could help countries make better use of available research, strengthen health systems and direct funding towards interventions that can improve cancer outcomes.

The discussions underscored the importance of ensuring that the Commission’s work is not confined to research and recommendations, but is translated into meaningful implementation that benefits countries across the Commonwealth, particularly small and developing states.
