Senator O’Neil urged young people to pursue their ambitions without allowing Antigua and Barbuda’s size to limit their potential, as students gathered at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium on Thursday for the National
Youth
Rally.
Delivering welcome remarks at the event marking the country’s 45th anniversary of independence, O’Neil said national development depended on the character, discipline, creativity and courage of the next generation.
“Our country may be small in size, but we must never be small in ambition,” he said.
O’Neil told students that independence represented more than raising the flag or singing the national anthem. It also meant having the freedom to dream, opportunities to achieve and responsibility for shaping the country’s future.
He pointed to Sir Vivian Richards as an example of someone whose achievements demonstrated that greatness was not restricted by geography, while highlighting young people excelling in cricket, athletics and academics.
“Where you come from should never limit how far you can go,” he said.
His message also extended to the day’s activities, encouraging students to represent their schools proudly, respect one another and give their best.
“True excellence is not simply about winning. It’s about giving your all,” O’Neil said.
The rally brought together primary and secondary school students for a celebration of national pride, featuring a march-past, coordinated salutes, music and creative interpretations of national dress.
Governor General’s Deputy Sir Clare Roberts and Acting Prime Minister Sir Steadroy Benjamin attended the opening proceedings.
Students waved national flags from the stands as school contingents marched across the field, accompanied by the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda Band and participating drum corps. Schools incorporated dance steps and changes of formation into their salutes, drawing cheers from supporters.
Princess Margaret School students formed the initials of their school on the field, while other contingents displayed coordinated routines and precision marching.
Post Millennial Academy won the creative wear competition, taking both the male and female best-dressed honours. Kids Unlimited placed second, followed by Divine Academy of Excellence.
The programme also recognised people whose service helped establish and sustain the rally. Committee chair Rochelle Ellis thanked former organisers for passing on their knowledge and supporting the current team.
“Your dedication and hard work have left a lasting legacy,” Ellis said.
Organisers announced that the Governor General’s Academic Awards, originally listed on the programme, would be deferred.
The formal proceedings included a rendition of “God Bless Antigua” by the Antigua Girls High School Choir and the national anthem led by St. John’s Lutheran School. Special drill competitions were scheduled to follow the march-past.
