Trinidad and Tobago’s Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister Sean Sobers represented Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar at a high-level breakfast meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and fellow Caribbean leaders in Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), following Persad-Bissessar’s withdrawal from the summit after contracting the flu.
Sobers confirmed his participation in a Facebook post, highlighting the importance of strengthening regional and international partnerships.
“I was pleased to participate in these discussions on behalf of Trinidad and Tobago, recognising the importance of maintaining strong relationships with our regional and international partners,” he said.
He added that meaningful dialogue and continued cooperation were essential to advancing shared interests and strengthening ties among nations.
Persad-Bissessar had initially been scheduled to lead Trinidad and Tobago’s delegation to CHOGM but withdrew after developing what she described to the Trinidad Guardian as a “bad case of flu.”
Sobers is now representing the government at the summit, which brings together leaders and representatives from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries in Antigua and Barbuda.
