The Antigua and Barbuda Table Tennis Association (ABTTA) staged its Pre-Independence Table Tennis Open on Saturday, October 25, at the Multipurpose Cultural & Exhibiton Centre. The event served as a tune-up for the upcoming ANOCES Table Tennis Championships to be held in Grenada from November 7–9.

Emerging as the standout performer of the evening was Mekhi Simmons, who dominated both the U19 and Open categories, displaying exceptional control and composure in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

In the U19 Final, Simmons defeated Emmanuel Stout in straight sets, 11–7, 11–4, 11–4. He returned to the table later in the night to claim the Open title, overcoming Sandra Joseph 11–8, 11–9, 9–11, 11–2, in a thrilling final that showcased power, patience, and precision.

The event attracted a competitive field of young and senior players alike, reinforcing ABTTA’s commitment to providing regular match-play opportunities for all levels of players under its Nex-Gen Ping Pong Development Program.

Speaking after the tournament, ABTTA President commended the players for their spirit and determination:

“This event highlights the growing enthusiasm for table tennis across Antigua and Barbuda. Our goal is to ensure that every player—from school beginners to national athletes—has the opportunity to compete, improve, and enjoy the sport.”

The Association now turns its attention to preparing the national team for the ANOCES Championships, where Antigua and Barbuda will aim to build on the positive momentum gained from recent domestic and regional competitions.
