The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre says it is dealing with an unusually early and severe influenza season, with 15 cases of Influenza A confirmed since December and one death linked to the virus.

Health officials say hospitals are already seeing patients become seriously ill, including some without underlying conditions. The medical centre’s intensive care unit has recorded an increase in cases requiring advanced life support.

Doctors are urging members of the public, particularly older adults, pregnant women, children and those with chronic illnesses, to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is described as safe and effective, cutting the risk of severe illness by up to 70%.

The hospital is also advising people to follow basic public health measures such as regular handwashing, covering coughs, avoiding close contact when sick and staying home if unwell. Vaccination information is available through local health clinics.
