Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene has congratulated the government and people of India as the country marks its 80th Independence Day, while highlighting the longstanding partnership between India and Antigua and Barbuda.
In a message marking the occasion, Greene said India’s independence on Aug. 15, 1947, was a defining moment not only for the Indian people but also for colonised nations around the world.
He said India’s struggle for freedom and subsequent development as a sovereign democracy inspired countries such as Antigua and Barbuda in their own pursuit of self-determination and independence.
Greene noted that India has emerged as a major global power while remaining an influential advocate for developing countries and the Global South.
He also praised India’s contribution to Antigua and Barbuda’s development, pointing to cooperation in education and training, health care, technology and capacity-building.
“Our own country has benefited from this generous and constructive partnership, which continues to strengthen the bonds of friendship between our two nations,” Greene said.
Greene wished India continued progress and prosperity and expressed hope for further strengthening of relations between the two countries.
