Prime Minister Gaston Browne says preliminary information received from law enforcement suggests the fatal shooting in Swetes Village may have been drug-related.

Browne made the statement Saturday while discussing the recent rise in violent crime on the Browne and Browne Show.

“I stand corrected, but I’m just saying that law enforcement officers have said to us that it’s drug-related,” Browne said.

The prime minister stressed that the information had not been fully confirmed and appealed to residents and immigrants to obey the laws of Antigua and Barbuda.

Police are investigating the shooting death of 39-year-old Kerew Richards of St. Ann’s Road, Swetes. Richards was found on the verandah of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds shortly before 10 p.m. Friday.

Investigators have not publicly announced a motive for the killing.
