OPINION: “They Would Burn Antigua to Rule Over the Ashes”: The Failure of the UPP’s Treacherous Power Play

In one of the most disgraceful political maneuvers in our nation’s history, the United Progressive Party (UPP) has once again proven that its lust for power knows no moral boundaries, no national loyalty, and no regard for the truth. But justice has prevailed.

The recent decision by the United States court to quash the Alfa Nero-related subpoenas stands as a **complete vindication of Prime Minister Gaston Browne and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) administration**. It wasn’t just a legal victory—it was a monumental affirmation of truth over lies, patriotism over treason, and leadership over opportunism.

At the heart of this shameful episode lies an astonishing betrayal. The UPP hierarchy, including its chairman Gisele Isaac and its leader, colluded with aggressive foreign interests—namely Yulia and her associates—in an attempt to smear the reputation of our Prime Minister and, by extension, the government of Antigua and Barbuda. Their goal was simple yet sickening: to fabricate controversy, undermine confidence, and damage our nation’s international standing, all in pursuit of narrow political gain.

From claims that Prime Minister Browne is worth USD $700 million to bizarre accusations of ownership in WIOC and the National Housing Program, the UPP manufactured a web of deceit so vast that it defied logic. Yet every single one of these claims has now been examined and utterly dismantled by the U.S. courts. Not one shred of credible evidence—no legitimate concern—has been upheld.

Their central narrative—surrounding an alleged “missing” $10 million—was nothing more than a Trojan horse, concealing a flood of falsehoods that backfired spectacularly. Rather than tarnish the image of the Prime Minister, they succeeded only in destroying their own. Their lies have not only been exposed; they’ve been judged, rejected, and ridiculed on the international stage.

Let us be clear: this was not politics. This was betrayal.

The UPP’s actions were not simply misguided; they were treasonous. In their desperate quest for power, they actively sought to bring down their own country, aligning themselves with foreign agents and feeding hostile narratives to international actors. What kind of political party weaponizes external influence to destroy its own people’s trust and tarnish its own nation’s reputation?

Can these misleaders truly be trusted with the reins of government? Can a party so bereft of principles—so willing to lie, deceive, and conspire—be allowed to shape the future of our children?

Where is the Christian faction of the UPP? Bishop Dorsette must be rolling in his grave!

The UPP has proven itself to be a retrogressive and dangerous force, willing to destroy everything in its path if it means grabbing power.

Now I see why serious party members walk away with years of experience associated with the institution. I understand why earnest and sincere elected MPs seek other constitutional avenues to promote nation-building.

While the ABLP has been working tirelessly to build this nation—investing in infrastructure, stabilizing the economy, and restoring global confidence—the UPP has been plotting its downfall, motivated not by love for the country but by raw ambition and vindictive spite.

This moment is not just a legal turning point—it is a moral reckoning. All right-thinking Antiguans and Barbudans must recognize the existential threat posed by the UPP’s brand of politics. We must resist their lies, expose their tactics, and ensure they remain what they have become: a cautionary tale confined to the dustbin of political history.

Let this be a clear and final message to the UPP and its enablers: Antigua and Barbuda will not be ruled over ashes. The people of this proud nation will not be deceived. And the truth—however inconvenient for the desperate and deceitful—will always prevail.
